Task Master
Organizing Daily Tasks and Deadlines in One Web Application Task Master is a task management web application developed as a collaborative academic project at Colegio de Montalban. It was designed to help students and professionals organize their responsibilities, prioritize work, and track progress through a central workspace. The project brings together task planning, deadlines, and completion tracking, with a documented scope that also covers calendar scheduling and reminders. Platform: Web Tech Stack: React · PHP · Laravel · Inertia.js Team: 10 Members My Role: Web Application Developer
The Problem
Students and professionals often balance multiple responsibilities with different priorities and deadlines. As workloads grow, relying on memory or scattered task lists makes it harder to decide what to work on next and keep track of unfinished work. The project addressed several needs: • A central place to organize academic, personal, and professional tasks • Clear priorities and due dates for planning work • A way to distinguish completed tasks from ongoing responsibilities • A schedule that makes upcoming work easier to review The goal was to make everyday task management easier to understand and maintain.
The Solution
We designed Task Master around a simple workflow: organize tasks, plan when to complete them, and track progress. Tasks — Organize The core task workflow covers creating tasks with a title, description, due date, and priority, then updating or removing them as plans change. Completion tracking helps users review finished work alongside their remaining responsibilities. Calendar — Plan The documented design includes a calendar view for reviewing tasks by day, week, or month, together with an external calendar integration to connect task deadlines with scheduling. Accounts and Reminders — Stay Connected Account registration and sign-in provide an entry point to the application. The documented scope also includes OAuth sign-in, email password recovery, and task notifications for upcoming or missed deadlines. React supplies the user interface, while Laravel and PHP support the web application. Inertia.js connects the React pages with the Laravel application.
My Contribution
I was the developer of Task Master, responsible for building the web application based on the requirements defined by our group. I developed the application using React, PHP, Laravel, and Inertia.js, translating the group's requirements into task-management workflows and connecting the user interface with the backend. I also implemented email reminders for pending tasks due tomorrow. These reminders are triggered by running the Laravel Artisan command php artisan app:send-upcoming-schedule-notification. My contribution focused on turning our group's requirements into a working application for organizing tasks, managing deadlines, and tracking progress.
Key Challenges
Keeping the Workflow Simple A task-management tool needs to make organizing work easier. Task details, priorities, deadlines, and completion status need to fit into a clear workflow that users can understand without adding unnecessary effort. Connecting Tasks and Schedules The calendar and reminder features in the documented scope depend on task information. Changes to due dates or task status need to be reflected consistently wherever that information is used. Account Access and Privacy The project scope includes personal accounts and administrative access to user tasks. Designing those responsibilities requires clear access boundaries and attention to how personal task information is handled.
Results
Task Master has a public web deployment hosted on Render, making the project accessible through the View Project link. The project established a task-management design centered on organization, prioritization, deadlines, and progress tracking. It also defined an evaluation plan involving BSIT students and professors at Colegio de Montalban, focused on time management, task prioritization, and productivity. That evaluation provides a direction for gathering user feedback and assessing how effectively the application supports everyday planning.
What I Learned
This project reinforced the importance of starting with the user's workflow. Task creation, prioritization, deadlines, and completion tracking are most useful when they work together in a clear process. It also helped me understand how a React interface fits into a Laravel application through Inertia.js, and how task data connects with broader concerns such as scheduling, notifications, and account access. Working on a group project highlighted the value of shared requirements and clear documentation. Future development would benefit from user feedback on the task workflow and practical evaluation of how well the application supports everyday planning.
